Woodward Academy Master Plan
College Park, Georgia
Woodward Academy, the largest independent day school in the continental United States, hired us to create a comprehensive master plan for their College Park campus in 2001. The school, founded as Georgia Military Academy, has retrofitted numerous buildings including dormitories to accommodate classes over the years. A new lower school, library and arts center were recently constructed, however, the classroom facilities were outdated and unable to accommodate current teaching methodologies. A new middle school, primary school, upper school classrooms facilities, math and science academy and renovated/expanded athletic facilities were envisioned in the master plan. Breaking down the scale of the campus by replacing large existing buildings with smaller classroom structures made the campus more porous, greatly improving the pedestrian traffic flow. Similarly our strategy of developing a hierarchy of green spaces and edging the campus with a series of lawns and buildings gave definition, organization and new life to the campus. The phased development of classroom and athletic facilities allowed for continual improvement with limited disruption to the academic year.
Additionally, the master plan is rooted in principles of sustainability. Four of the new buildings are LEED certified with the middle school classroom building achieving LEED Silver certification and the math and science academy achieving LEED Gold.
