Thomson Corporation acquired West Publishing, a 100 year old legal publishing giant. To help bring the newly merged organization into the technology age, we helped Thomson create a new workplace designed to reinforce the company’s new culture and vision. Strategic planning, master planning and design and renovation of 1.2 million square feet took place over the next five years. Since then, our relationship has expanded to offer full design services on a national level through our network of offices and expertise. Design services range from simple test fits and code reviews to full design and construction administration services.
The recently merged Thomson Reuters company needed to significantly increase space in an existing Thomson headquarters site located in a downtown Los Angeles office building. The project provided an opportunity to integrate their strong new corporate identity and provide an open and collaborative workspace for the users. A "gallery" space helps orientate and welcome visitors into the office and illustrates their varied business units that include web-based knowledge sites, television and editorial news.
It was demonstrated early on in the planning phase that space utilization and daylighting could be significantly improved for more users by relocating existing meeting and training spaces to a less deep part of the building footprint. A large portion of the existing space was retained to avoid unnecessary waste and cost. The planning solution provides a flexible and open workspace that can adapt to the client's future needs though the use of modular workstations. Materials and furniture were selected for their sustainable, long life-cycle attributes. Materials included carbonized bamboo, engineered stone, Greenguard certified fabrics and carpet.
