SFU Discovery 1 is a renovation project in the Discovery Park research area adjacent to the Burnaby campus of Simon Fraser University (SFU). The building was renovated in order to convert the interior spaces into flexible campus space that accommodates SFU academic, research, and non-academic uses, such as multi-tenant office and teaching facilities with classrooms, teaching labs, wet labs, and support spaces, such as offices and tutorial rooms.
The Fraser International College (FIC) occupies part of the facility, ensuring its importance as an inviting facility for overseas students to learn in while in British Columbia. Common spaces reinforce the diverse student body by celebrating their home country through artwork that is integrated with useful pin-up space. The existing atrium becomes a key social hub for the facility, providing space for social interaction and informal learning.
The project incorporates use of regional and recycled materials, as well as FSC-certified wood highlights. SFU branded colours integrate the project into the campus community. Emphasis is placed on natural daylight and fresh air for occupants.
