Riyadh Metro Stations
Riyadh Development Authority
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Commissioned by the Riyadh Development Authority, we designed three prototype stations (above-grade, at-grade, and below-grade) that will be applied to 72 passenger stations across the city’s six new transit lines. The project scope includes the design of eight additional major and multi-modal interchange stations. Expected to be completed within four years, Riyadh’s network will be the largest designed and built transit system to date, responding to the city’s dramatic population increase forecasted for 2030.
Further to providing passenger comfort, safety and security, our design responds to the Riyadh Transit Design Goals by providing a high quality experience. As a result, there will be increased visibility and attention to detail that will enhance passenger safety and experience, while improving public accessibility and convenience. The canopy design also establishes the Metro identity through a unifying palette, repeating forms and public values through sustainable design.
The signature canopy element employs sustainable technologies and strategies, including photovoltaic panels that will be integrated into the station canopies and will be one of the largest PV installations in the region. The urban design will also interact with its surrounding neighbourhood to create density around the transit stations, thereby reducing GHG emissions and the carbon footprint of the city.
