Requiring additional office space, Perkins+Will’s Vancouver studio saw immediate revitalization potential in a 1946 warehouse situated in the heart of Yaletown, the city’s historic warehouse zone and premiere live-work district. Originally a candy factory, the warehouse presented enormous opportunities for high-efficiency by virtue of its high ceilings, exposed concrete mass and open floor plan.

To infuse natural ventilation into the space, two large openings were cut into the floor slabs creating atria at the front and center of the building, each sized for optimum levels of ventilation and daylighting. The central atria serves as the organizing element for the office, providing visual connection between the three levels of workstations, while also directing natural light throughout the space via an operable skylight overhead.

Circulation spines run the office’s length on each floor, providing separation between service and work areas. Workstations are organized to optimize flexibility in team sizes and maximize daylight and ventilation at each station. Custom designed, the stations are composed of an easily reconfigurable system of components, allowing for maximum flexibility in arrangement.

The office achieved LEED® Canada Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance 2009 Platinum Certification in September 2014.
