Hanara Medical Centre + Sustainable Village Vision Plan

Hospitals, as institutions, have the potential to anchor new communities with a focus on health and wellness. Health communities are emerging as models to integrate healthcare services into the fabric of new developments. The health community model can be realized in many forms, including everything from providing proximity to medical facilities to delivering in-home medical care. The Hanara Medical Centre and Sustainable Village project explored the feasibility of a range of “health community” models on a large site in Erbil, Kurdistan.
In creating a vision plan for the Hanara Medical Centre and Sustainable Village, these models were overlaid on the site and narrowed down to three possible master plan scenarios. Each scenario was based on a common underlying planning framework that respected key physical properties of the 558-acre site, such as its location with views of surrounding mountain ranges and regional stormwater movement across the property. With the natural beauty, views, physical forms and environmental performance in mind, the framework created a system for development to allow the natural features of the site to be just as powerful in their present undeveloped state as they will be when the site is transformed into large sustainable health-centered community.
