Leadership Transition at Minneapolis Office Reflects Perkins+Will’s Commitment to Succession Planning

The Minneapolis office of Perkins+Will announces a leadership transition that both reflects their commitment to succession planning and strengthens the firm’s position for future growth.

Tony Layne, a 16-year veteran of the Minneapolis office, has moved into the managing director position. He has also been promoted from associate principal to principal. Prior to his promotion, Layne was co-chair of Perkins+Will’s firmwide Sustainable Design Initiative, a successful five-year effort to incorporate sustainability into every Perkins+Will project and design decision. Layne simultaneously worked as one of the lead designers for Minneapolis’s corporate and commercial practice.

In his new role, Layne is responsible for guiding the office’s culture and work product, ensuring they embody Perkins+Will’s values and commitment to sustainability, social responsibility, design excellence, innovation, and collaboration. Layne continues his work with Minneapolis’s corporate and commercial practice.

Layne’s promotion demonstrates the success of our nine-year-old Leadership Institute program. The Leadership Institute was created to identify and develop emerging leaders within the firm who would ensure the firm’s continued success. Layne was the first graduate of the program, which started in 2007, and will be the first graduate to be named a managing director.

Layne’s transition paves the way for Jeff Ziebarth, who for more than five years served as managing director of the Minneapolis office, to focus exclusively on and be a key leader within our global higher education practice. In this role, he serves as a hands-on resource for Perkins+Will’s 23 offices, overseeing planning and design for higher education projects around the world—particularly in the areas of medical and business education.

“Higher education has always been my passion, and I am eager to have the opportunity to focus on it full-time,” Ziebarth said.

While serving as the Minneapolis office’s managing director, Ziebarth strengthened and grew the office’s four primary practice areas, added a very successful urban planning practice area, and provided critical leadership coming out of a down economy and as they transitioned to the IDS Center.

Layne and Ziebarth’s new roles took effect on June 1, 2016.
