Boston Globe: Lab space designers plan for flexibility

These are good days to be in the business of designing lab space.

With lab construction going on in Cambridge and Boston, there’s a lot of work for people who know how to make the most of that pricey space. Just ask Jeff Zynda, academic science practice leader at the architecture firm Perkins + Will, which he recently joined after 16 years at Payette Associates. Zynda has helped create nearly 6 million square feet of lab space, from Waltham to Russia. It’s specialized work, designing buildings equipped to support technical research that are also adaptable when the focus of that research changes.
